David Sheppard bought his first telescope at the age of 15. It was a 4" Dynascope that is still in use. In 1979 he bought a 10" Cave Astrola that is also still operational. He recently purchased a 20" Dobsonian telescope from Obsession Telescopes.

He has a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from Arizona State University and a masters in astronautical engineering from Stanford University. He spent eight years in the USAF and 30 years in the aerospace industry working on many NASA Space Shuttle projects and the Viking Mission to Mars.

During 2002-3 he was NASA JPL's Solar System Ambassador for southwestern New Mexico. He taught astronomy at NMSU-Carlsbad for one semester.

Currently he is forcibly retired because of a long struggle with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).
